Pennsylvania’s rivers and streams provide
billions of dollars of direct and indirect economic benefit to the
Commonwealth’s families, farms, and industries. These benefits
are now threatened to a greater extent than perhaps at any time
since the 1960s due to manufacturing, abandoned and active mines,
and gas drilling operations that produce wastewaters that contain
dangerous levels of total dissolved solids (TDS), or salts.
As natural gas drilling continues to grow in Pennsylvania, rivers
and streams throughout the state will continue to be threatened
unless the problem is addressed by a comprehensive regulation.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has proposed
regulations that will start to address this threat by limiting the
TDS levels that new sources of pollution can discharge into Pennsylvania’s
rivers and streams. These regulations will insure that the cost
of protecting the state’s streams and rivers from contamination
by high-TDS wastewaters will be borne by drillers and others who
create the wastewater rather than by those who are dependent on
rivers and streams for recreation, drinking water, agriculture,
or other uses.
You can help protect Pennsylvania’s rivers and streams by
speaking out in support of the proposed regulations at any one of
four public hearings that DEP is holding across the state:
Monday, December 14, 5:00 p.m.
Cranberry Township Municipal Building
2525 Rochester Road, Cranberry Townships, PA 16066

do so, call the DEP at 717- 787-4526.
We hope to see you there!

Vice President Al Gore discussed his latest
views on the climate and politics in a number media appearances
before heading to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in
Copenhagen, Denmark.
Vice President Gore responded directly to the current media fixation
surrounding the recent release of climate emails, calling it a “controversy
without substance.”
